This week was absolutely amazing!
On Thursday Hermana Beatty and I got to go up to the sierras for girls
camp! It is always a miracle to go up where there are trees :) We were
asked to give a 30 minute class to the beehives, the miamaids, and the
laurels. There were about 55 girls there. She didn't give us a topic,
so we decided to teach the girls the most important thing and the
"why" of missionary work. The atonement of Jesus Christ. We decided to
do an activity that I did when I was at girls camp. We bought a bunch
of cookies for each girl. But we told them there was a price. But
Hermana Hubert was going to pay that price for them. (We didn't feel
comfortable asking one of the girls) A 15 second plank. Hermana Beatty
walked around and gave each girl a cookie and asked them to say their
name out loud. I then said there name and popped up for a 15 second
plank. It was so powerful and it was so interesting how fast the mood
of the room changed. The loud laughter stopped, the spirit entered,
and it was powerful. You could hear some girls cheer, some girls
whimper, and others just sit there quiet as my body began to shake.
Man it was hard! Tears came from leaders, the girls, from my
companion, and I. At the end we asked some of the girls to bear their
testimonies. Some leaders shared as well. It was so powerful. We saw a
girl in the back just glowing and asked her to bear her testimony. A
leader kind of jumped and looked a little startled, but we just went
with it. She bore such a powerful testimony and testified that she
knew the church was true. We found out after she wasn't a member! I
left the camp with gratitude for my young women leaders and mother who
taught me that beautiful analogy/activity of the Saviors atonement.
And with some pretty sore abs.
The second miracle was a new investigator we found this past week. We were driving along and saw a man walking along the side of the rode with a big backpack and a cross around his neck. That morning we had studied how Christ talked with everyone and how he was not a respecter of persons. We flipped a U-turn and pulled over. He ran up to the car and we explained who we were and how we felt we needed to talk to him. Turns out he had just recently got out of jail and was getting ready for his walk to California. When he was in jail he told God that he was going to change and prove it by walking to California to him. We met with him, and wow I can't even describe in words! We taught him on Saturday about the atonement. And one of the most beautiful things I have seen is someone clapping their hands together with tears of joy to know that because of the atonement he can receive a remission of his sins.
I testify that the most important thing is the atonement of Jesus Christ. It is the center of our message and is the "why". If we don't teach with the atonement as the center of our message, it is like riding a bike on a flat rode on the lowest gear. You will peddle and peddle and peddle and waste a lot of energy. When you teach with the atonement, you get the traction you need to quickly arrive at the destination, which is eternal life for your investigators. I know our savior lives. I challenge you guys to watch the Because He Lives video. I promise you will get the chillsies. :)
Love,
Hermana Hubert
